The 3G auction may be delayed for another six moths as the Department of Telecom (DoT) will not be able to meet the deadline fixed earlier i. e. December 7, 2009.
As per the news sources, the Defence Ministry has issued a statement to DoT, which said that it would be in a position to release the 20 MHz of spectrum only if it had committed in June 2010 in spite of December 7, 2009.
While talking to reporters, an official from DoT said, “We will go ahead with the auction of 3G spectrums according to the timeline. If the defence forces are unable to vacate the spectrum on schedule and do so only in June, then some successful bidders will be put in queue for spectrum.”
In the meantime, DoT has decided to go ahead as per their schedule, and it aims to complete the bidding four 3G license per circle by December.
DoT has proper spectrum for most of circles apart from the national capital, which has spectrum for 2 players, Gujarat (also two), Rajasthan and the north east region. This ultimately shows that customers in these states will have to wait till 2011 for 3G services.
However, the information note for the 3G auction was most probably to be finalized by September 29.
