GM joins India's Reva to make electric car

General Motors Co, US-based automaker, has joined hands with India’s Reva Electric Car Co. to develop a small and affordable electronic car for the Indian market. The production of the electric car will start from 2010.

Talking to media, Mr. Cheatan Maini, deputy chairman of Reva said, “Our unique collaboration has the potential to result in far-reaching changes for the industry.” He said that the company likes to take India to a global level for the development and manufacturing of electric cars.

The company has launched its first electric car in India in 2001, and now it hopes to gear-up its yearly production of electric cars up to 30000 units.

On the other hand, GM has recently launched a battery research lab in the US to accelerate production of electric and hybrid cars. Production of the Chevrolet Volt, which can drive up to 40 miles without gasoline, is all set to begin in the US by the end of 2010.

A statement issued by GM said that it aims to establish a new research center in Shanghai. The research center would basically focus on developing ‘breakthrough’ auto technologies for the future such as battery cells and driverless vehicles.
