The central government has announced 29 new police stations in New Delhi along with 6,478 additional policemen, in view of threat sensitivity in the national capital.
Out of the 29 stations, seven has already started working.
During the occasion, Home Minister, Mr. P. Chidambaram said, “'I am glad to inform you that taking note of the growing needs of the metropolitan city of Delhi, the central government has sanctioned additional manpower of 6,478 policemen at a cost of Rs. 199 crore per annum.” Mr. Chidambaram added that with this the total number of police stations in the national capital will increase to 155.
In addition to this, Delhi Police would also have another 14 police stations for wings like Crime Branch, Economic Offences Wing, Delhi Metro, Special Cell, Crime Against Women Cell, Narcotics and Indira Gandhi International Airport.
According to an official, the central government has also approved nine sub-divisions to be directed by an Assistant Commissioner of Police.
At the moment, Delhi Police have 44 sub-divisions.
