Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi announced a hefty increase in salaries for teachers in universities, government colleges and government- aided colleges.
The wage revision follows the state administration’s decision to accept the UGC’s recommendations in toto.
Talking to reporters, CM M Karunanidhi said that professors of universities and colleges would now get Rs 62,085 per month from the existing pay scale of Rs 40,344.
On the other hand, the newly appointed professors would be paid Rs 26,352 per month from the current pay scale of Rs 19,680 per month.
CM also added that the new wages would be given with effect from January 1, 2006 and full cash benefits would be given from January 1, 2007, and the arrears would be given in three installments.
Hike in pay scales would benefir about 20,000 teachers and an additional expenditure of Rs 557.49 crore per annum to the exchequer.
Mr. Karunanidhi said with regard to other allowances, the beneficiaries would get them on par with Central Government staff.
